Alpacas and llamas originate from South America and are related to the wild vicuñas and guanacos . During the time of the Incas, llamas were used as pack animals and alpacas as suppliers of meat and wool. The largest population of alpacas can be found in Peru; around 80% of all alpacas live there. Although they have no humps, their ancestry means they belong to the camel family and are therefore also known as New World camelids or Andean camels. There they are exposed to harsh weather conditions such as cold, wind, rain and intense sunlight.
